The Wall, by tower number

Mutianyu numbers each watchtower sequentially, making navigation straightforward. Tower 23 marks where official preservation ends and the wild ridge begins. Below is the full ridge plotted on a single scale.

Turn back hereWest of Zhengbeilou, the ridge narrows into near-vertical cliff edges with crumbling masonry. Our field advice is firm: take in the panorama at Zhengbeilou, then retrace your steps.

The restored section. Ticketed, with a chairlift and a toboggan — the only one of the four that suits a first visit to the Wall.

It is 30 minutes from the hotel on one of its free bikes, and you can leave the bike at the Great Wall Hotel. If you would rather not ride, the hotel car takes you when it is free.

Getting up

The shuttle covers the 3 km between the ticket office and the foot of the wall — about 40 minutes if you walk it instead. From there the chairlift lands you near Tower 6; the south trail reaches Tower 6 or 8 in about 40 minutes, the north trail Tower 8 or 10.

Coming down

Chairlift up, toboggan down, is the combination this place recommends. The cable car at the north end serves Tower 14.

The chairlift stops at 16:50, the cable car at 16:30, and the site closes 8:00–17:00. Work backwards — do not leave it to the last car.

Worth knowing

There is an international ATM at the ticket office that takes foreign debit cards. The merchandise area has a Burger King and a Subway; anything else you want to eat on the wall, bring it.
