Wall and travel questions
Choosing a Wall section and practical questions before a trip.
The Wall
- Which section of the Great Wall should I visit?
Pick Mutianyu if you are traveling with kids or grandparents, or prefer paved flagstones, chairlifts, and toboggan rides. Choose Jiankou for raw mountain ridge hiking and dramatic stone cliffs (turn around at Zhengbeilou). Head to Huanghuacheng for quiet dawn sunrise walks over the reservoir, or Jiuyanlou for tranquil forest walking.
More →- Where can I watch sunrise on the Great Wall?
Huanghuacheng has an unrestored section without a ticket gate. Check current access rules, weather, trail conditions and sunrise time before setting out in darkness.

Getting here
- Do I need to carry cash notes?
Mutianyu accepts WeChat Pay, Alipay, credit cards, and has an on-site ATM. However, if you hike wild trails or want to buy freshly harvested walnuts and chestnuts from roadside villagers, keeping 50–100 RMB in paper banknotes is very practical.
